Global Teachers' Award Level 1 & 2

Global-Teachers-AwardWiltshire Global Education Centre has been offering the Global Teachers' Award level 1 since January 2013 and Level 2 since 2015. Both courses are accredited by Liverpool Hope University; and are now validated as part of the Government's new Global Learning Programme and can be paid for with partner school e-credits. Level 3 is currently being developed by the Consortium of Development Education Centres.

Global Teachers' Award Level 1

The overall aim of the programme is to raise the profile and quality of development education provision in England. The programme will result in teachers with greater skills, confidence and understanding to embed development education in the curriculum. The specific changes we expect to see in teacher practice are encapsulated in the learning outcomes of the Global Teachers Award teacher training programme.Every Global Teachers' Award training course will include activities that support these learning outcomes.

The learning outcomes are:

  • Teachers have increased their ability to understand and critique the knowledge base and key concepts associated with education for a just and sustainable world (global learning)
  • Teachers are able to identify a range of different perspectives and question the assumptions behind them
  • Teachers have enhanced their understanding of approaches to learning which promote critical literacy
  • Teachers have developed practical ideas for incorporating new insights into their personal lives and work-related roles
  • Teachers are able to justify incorporating global learning in the curriculum and include activities to measure changes in attitudes of their pupils in relation to certain global issues
  • Teachers have increased confidence and understanding of how to promote informed, active global citizenship

Global Teachers' Award Level 2

This is a 2 day course and participants are required to hold a Global Teachers' Award Level 1 Certificate.

The overall aim of the Level 2 course is to:

  • stimulate critical thinking about global issues both at whole school and at student level
  • facilitate teachers to help young people to understand their role in a globally-interdependent world and to explore strategies by which they can make it more just and sustainable
  • encourage teachers to evaluate the functions of education in a fast changing work and to critique their own global classroom practice
  • encourage teachers to evaluate their global role within their own teaching establishment and prepare them for taking it further

Learning outcomes, by the end of the course participants will:

  • have increased their ability to critique the knowledge base and key concepts associated with global learning
  • be able to identify a range of different perspectives and question the assumptions behind them
  • have enhanced their understanding of the approaches to learning which promote critical literacy and thinking
