Global Education
In 1990 MBG's educational arm, the Wiltshire Global Education Centre (WGEC), was set up. Its aims are to:
- Provide a focal point for education about global issues resulting from MBG's link with Gunjur and provide support for global citizenship in schools
- Build mutually supportive relationships with local schools, Local Education Authorities and other Development Education Centres.
Wiltshire Global Education Centre believes education for global citizenship to be at the heart of teaching and learning to enable young people to deal with the challenges and opportunities of our fast changing world. We encourage an approach that helps young people see the 'global'as part of our everyday lives and see global education as being not just about other people and other places but about the interconnected nature of our lives.
Our activities include:
- I
- INSET for teachers on global education.
- organising/facilitating pupil workshops, conferences and other activities in schools.
- providing advice and support for the development of North-South school links.
- organising annual teachers' study visits to Gunjur in The Gambia.
- coordinating Wiltshire Global Forum.
- managing a resource centre for teachers with a wide variety of publications for sale and for hire.
- publication of a regular newsletter that goes to all Wiltshire and Swindon schools.
- producing education resources for schools
New Projects
We are currently running two new projects funded by DFID (Department for International Development) and GLEAN (Global Learning Network SW). They are: Globalvolunteers @ DofE and Whole School Global Awards.
This is an innovative project in which Wiltshire Global Education is working in partnership with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. It shares the aim of the DofE programme that young people should be encouraged to 'create positive change for themselves and society.' The project involves working over three years with groups of young people in Wiltshire, developing their skills as local and global citizens. Through the project they will gain knowledge of development issues, new skills as ambassadors for change and set up Global Action Groups as part of the volunteering section of the D of E Award. If your school or youth centre would be interested in taking part, please contact Caroline on 01672 861116
Whole School Global Awards:
WGEC supports schools in the SW to achieve a whole school award with a strong global learning component. So if your school is interested in working towards an award such as the Global School Award, the Fairtrade School Award or Rights Respecting School Award, contact Caroline for further information.
