UKOWLA
Set up in 1984 to support, promote and encourage communities in the UK to develop partnerships with communities in the 'South' (mainly but not exclusively Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean).
UKOWLA echoes the town-twinning set up after the World War II to help prevent future wars starting in Europe. Formed in the wake of the growing recognition of North -South disparities in the early 1980s, focussed in the Brandt Commission report of 1980.
Encourages linking for mutual development, in particular between communities in the UK and communities in the South, and supports existing links. There is a wide and diverse membership of around 150 groups and individuals.
Produces three times a year informative newsletter and holds a national conference every two years.
