Summer Group 2026

The 18th Summer Group from St’ John’s School in Marlborough is in Gunjur during August supporting Gunjur Lower Basic School.

Teacher accommodation

The group of students are working to repair the derelict staff accommodation. This will be three bedrooms and toilets to provide accommodation for teachers who travel from a long way, improving the employment offered by the school. We are delighted to be supporting the Lower Basic School again as it was the site of our very first summer trip project in 1985.

The project funded by MBG will be delivered as usual with St’ John’s students volunteering and working alongside professional builders in Gunjur leading the project with volunteers from the Gunjur community. The existing building will be strengthened with new roof, windows, veranda, bathrooms with soak-away, electrics and painting. Below is the building before the team arrive.  We hope to provide updates while they are in Gunjur.

Living in Gunjur

The group of students, teaches and leaders from Venture Force will be staying in the Gunjur Community Centre, originally built as a pre-school through MBG and TAURD in the 1990’s and now a resource for the town. It is in the centre of the town so the group can easily walk to the market, project site and around the community.

While the project is a big part of the trip, volunteering along side volunteers from Gunjur, it is being in the community that is so important. MBG trips are all about cultural exchange, shared learning and mutual understanding. The group will spend much of it’s time in Gunjur and learning about The Gambia. It is this time spent together with people from both communities that has the deepest and most lasting impact.
